Our Story
Hat Rack Theatre Co. started with a dream shared by two people who love theatre and the experiences that happen around it.
After decades spent working in theatre, the arts, and creative spaces, founders Zach and Rebecca Johnson began imagining what they might build together on California’s Central Coast: a company where meaningful work, talented people, and thoughtful collaboration could come together, with a little room left for the unexpected.
We wanted to create a place where the production is always at the heart of the experience, but where the experience doesn’t necessarily begin with the first note or end with the final bow.
Hat Rack is still at the beginning of its story. We hope you’ll be part of what comes next. After all, every story has to begin somewhere and...

Why Hat Rack?
People ask us about the name. We get it. Hat Rack is a little unexpected.
The truth is, we’ve always loved hats. We love what they can say about someone without saying anything at all. They can be stylish, sentimental, theatrical, completely impractical, or something you’ve held onto for years without quite knowing why. We have a few of those. In fact, we have a collection of more than 200 vintage hats.
But mostly, we love their ability to transform.
Put on a hat and something shifts. Onstage, it can change the way an actor moves, reveal something about a character, place us in another time or another world, or quietly change the way we understand the story.
When it came time to name the company, we wanted something that felt personal to us and connected to what we love about theatre: storytelling, transformation, imagination, and the possibility of seeing something differently.
Hat Rack just kept coming back. And the more we thought about it, the more it made sense. A hat rack holds a collection of possibilities. You never quite know what might be hanging there or which one you’ll reach for next.
That felt like us. So, stay tuned for which hat will be hanging next...
